Permit Drivers: Do you need to add them to your insurance policy?

By February 24, 2020June 9th, 2020Auto Insurance

This is one of the days your teen has waited on for years, the day they get their permit to drive. While they are excited to finally have the chance to get behind the wheel of the car, you may be a little reluctant not being exactly sure what this big step means to you. The big question is, once they have their permit do you need to add them to your auto insurance policy? Another question we get is, does my permit driver need their own policy or can they be on mine? Bickle Insurance is here to help you understand this new milestone.

 Talk to your agency

While some companies like to be notified when your young driver obtains their permit others do not need to know. Bickle Insurance Services ALWAYS recommends when you have a new driver with a permit to call and let your agent know so you can avoid any loss you may think is covered. Every company is different so the best approach is before your teen gets behind the wheel, notify us so we can make sure the right steps are taken to ensure your protected.  How to pick the right car for your teen

Bickle Insurance Services knows some vehicles can rate differently on your auto policy. Now that your teen has their permit you may want to think about the type of vehicle you purchase or give your teen if you have an extra. A less “flashy” car or something with a high safety rating is recommended for new drivers. You want to avoid sports cars, or something older with a low safety rating as they may increase your rates more. Once your teen receives their license this is when you want to contact Bickle Insurance Services or your agent again to inform them so your driver can be added to your policy.

Tips for insuring new drivers

When you have a new driver, different companies offer discounts for good students. If your teen excels in school, you can turn in their grade card for special discounts on your policy depending on the company. Another great thing certain companies offer is accident forgiveness. If your teen gets involved in a fender bender or crash as new driver, accident forgiveness will not raise your rates based off the first accident. Bickle Insurance Services has a range of options for you to consider that will help make you the best prepared for the new road ahead.

Take advantage of this time and know that you have all your bases covered when your teen gets their permit.
